Links to Linux Resources

These links are provided for your education and enjoyment. All were relevant in some way to Linux at the time of their inclusion. Distributions

The Linux kernel, by itself, isn't terribly useful to most people. So a number of organizations have created Linux "Distributions" (or distros) which include lots of applications and documentation. Some of the organizations providing such distributions are listed here.

For a complete list with much more description of each distribution's benefits, see the distributions list at www.linux.org, or distromania.com, or DistroWatch. See LWN.net weekly edition for news about Linux distributions, and Wikipedia's Comparison of Linux distributions for an overview of the major distros. For a good overview of switching to Linux, see 'Make The Move'. And for why you should avoid Windows Vista, see BadVista.org.

In the Dayton area, the largest variety is at Micro Center in Cincinnati or Columbus. I haven't seen any Linux distro at Circuit City or Wal-Mart in well over a year (although WalMart.com sells PCs with Lycoris Desktop/LX installed - neither Lycoris nor the PCs are sold in stores). Also, the larger book stores, such as Barnes & Noble, Books & Co., and Borders have Sams, Hungry Minds (formerly IDG), Que, etc. Linux books with an installation CD.
