Internet Access:

|||||Go To Contents|||||

Accessing the Internet from home is dependent on the level of access service you desire. Currently (1/98), I (Stan Rohrer) roughly estimate full access for Netscape (or other graphical browser) connect capabilities will cost about $90-$360  (usually $180-$240) per year  in the Dayton, Ohio, area, depending on fee structures and actual use.  These would typically, but not always, provide a SLIP or PPP type of connection software.  AOL is a big name provider. GemAIR, ERInet, Dayton Internet, DNAco, DoNet, SISCOMGlass City, COAXnet, and Midwest Internet are among the  Dayton Area providers including Ohio. Based on comparisons I've seen, go with a local provider if you intend to have more than 15-20 hours a month (3.5-5 hours per week) of connect time. The kids (big and small) can burn up this time easily while doing Web surfing. A few of the names may charge by the hour, after the initial few free hours, and some seem to be running under a flat fee, unlimited hours, approach. RCInet provides some discounting for DMA (see below) members.  Many of the providers change fee structures to fight the competition and pricing is always subject to change.

There are some cut-rate providers also becoming available which use non-standard connections and other area BBS (Bulletin Board Systems).  These may require purchases, club membership, or have other restrictions (often you must use specific programs to gain access or stay within certain time constraints)  but they may be very reasonable cost wise for a casual user who fits the restrictions.   Some computer stores, for example, offer free or discounted Internet access based on purchase of hardware or software.

The Dayton Microcomputing Association (DMA), at 513-434-4638, has Usenet for reading and a personal E-Mail address which can be used for free (sign-up required before access is granted). Membership is only $12 per year (reference member ID 30524 and Stan Rohrer gets a whopping 2 free months benefit). DMA membership allows Usenet write access and a Unix shell account access if desired. Additional fees are charged for accounts with higher levels of Internet connectivity (such as text based WWW browsing).   DMA membership also has some discount privileges with GemAIR for users who wish full Internet access accounts.  Some of the other Dayton area BBS systems are getting set up to handle free Internet E-Mail. If you have a favorite BBS, ask the Sysop if he plans to provide Internet E-Mail, if that is the only Internet access level you need.

Trying to find Internet sites that are in the Dayton area?  Perhaps these resources can help.  Note that many local organizations may actually be using Internet servers that are not local.  These will only be found by Web search engines.

I'm from the Dayton suburb named Beavercreek.  You might note my slant towards the east side of Dayton.
